Pour Ma. - 4e partie

FMQ

Parallels lines are completed, as well as the FMQ frames.  Lines are finally 1/2" apart and not 1/4".

For the first time, I used two colors of thread on the top: dark grey for the lines and medium gray to enlight FMQ.

For the backing, only one colorr has been used.  The tension is good, we can't see the other thread on the backing.  I found only one bird nest, so I will live it it.

Everybody say to test your marking tool on every new fabric.  Et who has not: me !  The chalk pencil is hard to remove on the dark grey fabric.  I'll need to wash out the quilt completely.

Coupe / Cutting

For the left and right sides, I'm following the quilted lines, and not measuring from side to side.  I'm cutting à 3/4" from the last quilted line.

Biais / Binding

I always use a 2 1/4" biais strip.  I like my biais to be thin and full.  I often leave a 1/8" additionnal fabric outside of the biais, to have it really full.

  1. I love the idea of using the large amount of negative space on a modern quilt for showing off your FMQ. Markers are a pain. I have not found one that I can rely on. If I am going to mark now I use tailor's chalk. It is not fine enough to give a precise line - but it is easy to get out!

    1. I used those chalk pencils on other quilts before (and dark solid fabrics) and never had a problem to remove them with just a little bit of water. This fabric jus't does'nt love it. Hera marker is great for that, if you quilt completely in the cease, you won't even see it afterward.

  2. Beautiful quilting! Your son's hand print is SOO adorable!! I like a thinner, more full binding as well and have started cutting my strips thinner :) I also think it reduces the 'ripple' that sometimes happens with a thicker binding.

I just got a Hera marker - can't wait to give it a whirl!!

    1. I sometimes make a 2 1/2 binding, but I add a full 1/4 "batting allowance" to fill it. At my guild, some people do even larger binding, but with no filling, it really doesn't look good.

  4. Very nice quilt! I usually use a 2 1/4" binding. I like using the miracle chalk markers-they disappear with steam.

  6. What amazing quilting! And I'd have left that bird's nest in place. A little imperfection here or there just shows it was made with love by a person, not a machine. At least that's what I used to say when I sold hand made crystal! :)

    1. Hi. The bird nest is still there. The thread is blending, and I saw it because I was taking a closeup picture, I wouldn't have notice otherwise. First I tought that doing vertical lines will be quicker than FMQ.... I was wrong !
