Courtepointe moderne et historique / Modern and historical Quilt

This quilt has a modern look but shows a part of the history of Quebec. In 2012 spring, the government announced a raise of tuition at the University. Tuition in Quebec are historically among the lower in North America. To denounce this raise, students took to the streets of Montreal during several months, forcing cancellation of classes in several faculties. This event was named "printemps érable" (Maple Spring, as Maple is the emblem of Canada), in reference to the "Arab spring".
Opponents to the raise were wearing a red square. Partisans, less visible, were wearing a green square. My cousin was president of a students association opposed to the raise at that time. Opponents win, the government stepped back.

I love quilts that make a statement. I remember the student protests very well and they were top of the news right across Canada. This is such an original quilt and quilting you've done is fabulous. Good luck with this entry! I'll be voting tomorrow for sure!
RépondreSupprimerThank you. I remembered the protest very well. My cousin had a tough time during that period, not all students were thinking the same way. I have always admired historical quilts for the story they told. This one is about a contemporary event, so it's an ununsual way to documented it. And don't think there will be another quilt to document that event.
SupprimerWhat a beautiful quilt!
RépondreSupprimerThank you. It's far from a Baltimore album quilt about the Civil War.
